Choosing Your Matcha Bowl: The Complete Chawan Guide
Partager
An ordinary bowl works perfectly well. But a chawan changes something. The ergonomics, the warmth of the ceramic, the gesture of holding it — everything is designed for this specific drink.
What is a chawan?
The chawan (茶碗) is the traditional Japanese tea bowl used to prepare and drink matcha. Its design is not arbitrary: each feature serves a precise function in matcha preparation.
Important characteristics
The shape: A classic chawan is wide (12-15 cm in diameter) and relatively shallow. This ample shape allows for an energetic Z-shaped whisking motion without the risk of splashing. A narrow bowl would be a constant hindrance.
Thick walls: The thick ceramic keeps the temperature longer and is pleasant to hold with both hands (as is traditional in Japan).
Flat and stable bottom: To place the bowl between each whisking motion without it tipping over.
Did you know?
In the Japanese tea ceremony, the chawan is the most precious object. Old chawans handmade by master ceramists are sold at auction for tens of thousands of euros. Imperfection is valued — this is the concept of wabi-sabi.
Different types of chawan
Summer chawan (natsu chawan): Flat and wide shapes, allowing the matcha to cool faster. Used from May to September.
Winter chawan (fuyu chawan): Taller and narrower shapes, which reduce the contact surface with the air and keep the matcha hot longer.
Contemporary chawan models: Simpler, often geometric shapes, adapted to modern daily use. These are the ones found in current matcha kits.
Which material to choose?
- Ceramic / stoneware: The traditional choice. Retains heat well, beautiful appearance, each piece is unique. Requires careful maintenance (no dishwasher for quality pieces).
- Porcelain: Thinner, smoother, easy to clean. Less "warm" in the sensory sense, but very practical.
- Stainless steel / glass: For modern, nomadic uses. Functional but outside the traditional ritual.
Do you need a chawan to start?
No — an ordinary bowl of the right size works perfectly fine. The main thing is that it is wide enough for the whisking motion. But if you are looking to deepen the experience of the matcha ritual, the chawan adds a real sensory and aesthetic dimension.
The SUPRAMATCHA Master Pack includes a chawan matcha bowl, specifically designed for comfortable daily use.
