Matcha and Caffeine: How Much Does it Really Contain?
Partager
It's sometimes written that matcha contains "as much caffeine as an espresso," and sometimes "half as much." The reality is more nuanced—and above all, quantity isn't everything.
The Actual Caffeine Content of Matcha
For 2 grams of matcha powder (the standard dose for one bowl), the caffeine content ranges between 35 and 70 mg depending on quality, cultivar, and growing conditions.
This wide range is due to several factors:
- Heavily shaded matcha (like ceremonial Saemidori) concentrates more caffeine
- The first harvest (ichibancha) is richer than subsequent harvests
- The cultivar also plays a role: Yabukita is generally richer in caffeine than Saemidori
Comparison with Other Beverages
Per 1 standard serving:
- Matcha (2g): 35-70 mg
- Espresso (30ml): 60-80 mg
- Filter Coffee (200ml): 80-120 mg
- Brewed Green Tea (200ml): 20-40 mg
- Black Tea (200ml): 40-70 mg
- Cola (330ml): 35-40 mg
Key point: Matcha generally contains less caffeine than an espresso. It also naturally contains L-theanine, an amino acid specific to tea.
Caffeine, L-theanine, catechins: what a bowl contains
In a bowl of matcha, caffeine is not alone: the whole leaf also provides L-theanine and catechins, the compounds that give matcha its umami taste and slight astringency.
Can you drink matcha in the evening?
The half-life of caffeine is approximately 5 to 7 hours. A bowl of matcha at 3 PM will still have active traces around 9 PM. If you are sensitive to caffeine, it's best not to drink it after 2 PM.
Some people metabolize caffeine more quickly (genetically) and can consume it until 5 PM without affecting sleep. Everyone is different—listen to your body.
How many bowls of matcha per day?
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends not exceeding 400 mg of caffeine per day for a healthy adult. At 35-70 mg per bowl, you can consume 3 to 5 bowls of matcha per day without approaching this threshold.
In practice, 1 to 3 bowls per day is the most common dose among regular drinkers. In the morning to start the day well, and possibly after lunch for the afternoon.
Frequently asked questions
Does matcha contain more caffeine than green tea?
Yes, because you consume the entire ground leaf. Brewed green tea only extracts a portion of the compounds. Per equal weight of leaves, matcha delivers more caffeine to your cup.
Does caffeine-free matcha exist?
There are decaffeination processes for tea, but they significantly alter the aromas and color. This is not a recommended version for ceremonial matcha.
