Why the Chasen? The tool without which matcha doesn't truly exist.
Description
Elegant, minimalist, and timeless, this black bamboo whisk is the essential tool for achieving perfectly smooth and frothy matcha.
Crafted from a single piece of hand-carved bamboo, it embodies the Japanese tradition of chado with the confident attitude unique to Supramatcha.
Its 100 fine and flexible prongs create a dense, uniform, and velvety foam — the one that reveals the full aromatic depth of ceremonial matcha.
Each whisk is engraved with the Supramatcha logo.
The traditional Japanese whisk, no shortcuts
The chasen is not just another kitchen utensil: it is the tool the Japanese tea ceremony refined over centuries. Its prongs, cut one by one from the wall of a single bamboo stalk, follow the curve of the bowl and disperse the powder without ever crushing it. Where a spoon leaves lumps and a flat surface, this bamboo matcha whisk traps air and produces a fine, stable emulsion with a velvety surface.
It is also a gesture. Thirty seconds of W-motion, wrist relaxed, before the first sip: the ritual is part of the taste. Pair it with our ceremonial Saemidori matcha 30 g to get the best of both. If speed matters most in your daily routine, our electric version is the modern alternative — handy for lattes, but it does not reproduce the texture obtained with a chasen.

Frequently asked questions
Can you prepare matcha without a chasen?
⌄You can, but the result is not the same. A spoon or a fork leaves lumps and a flat surface. The 100 prongs of the chasen disperse the powder through the water and trap air in it: that is what creates the dense foam and velvety texture of a well-made matcha.
What is the difference between a chasen and an electric frother?
⌄The chasen is the traditional Japanese tool: it works the powder gently and gives a fine, stable foam, true to the gesture. The rechargeable frother is faster and works well for lattes, but it beats more than it emulsifies. The two uses are complementary.
Should the chasen be prepared before first use?
⌄Yes. Soak the prongs in warm water for a few minutes before the first use: the bamboo softens, the prongs open into a crown and are less likely to break.
How do you care for a bamboo matcha whisk?
⌄Rinse it with cold water immediately after use, without soap and never in the dishwasher. Then let it air-dry with the prongs facing up. A chasen holder helps keep the prongs in their crown shape.
